Viva the World Cup! We have soccer on the brain this summer as we watch our favorite soccer stars battle for the highest prize. While they may not have been World Cup qualifiers, some of our favorite celebrities kicked around a ball or two back in their high school days.

The Oxford Dictionary named “selfie” as word of the year. And what a year it has been for the selfie, a new craft honed to perfection, and none have perfected the art better than some of our favorite celebrities. We’ve seen them hamming it up for the camera in various states of undress, costumes and facial expressions. And many of the pictures aren’t too far from many of them before the fame.

MTV brings the summer of 2012 to a close with the live 29th annual MTV Video Music Awards on September 6 at 8/7c pm. As usual, the nominee list is a who’s who of the music industry elite with Rihanna and Drake at the front of the pack each with five “Moonman” nods.  Always a wild TV party, the VMA ceremony also actually celebrates music (which was the cornerstone of the cable channel back in the day), so expect performances by Rhianna, One Direction, Pink, Green Day and a whole lot more.
