Who am I? Annette Bening as a sexually frustrated housewife in the goofy 1988 John Candy comedy The Great Outdoors, written by ’80s legend John Hughes.
Way back when: In an exclusive interview, The Great Outdoors director Howard Deutch, also known for directing Pretty in Pink and Some Kind of Wonderful, tells Snakkle, “When I first read her for the part, she came in and said, ‘I think this woman has a secret.’ Her idea was that her character has this secret that she’s having an affair with the neighbor. So the sexual frustration was all her idea.”
Now, as then: Warren Beatty gave a heartfelt tribute to his wife on the red carpet at this year’s Oscars, extolling her virtues as a mother both on- and off-screen. Deutch confirms Bening’s maternal instinct: “There were two little twins who hadn’t acted before, and when I lost patience with them, Annette took it upon herself to coach them, mother them, and help me get performances out of them.”
