Take one Greek singleton, throw in an all-American guy, and what do you get? Try the 2002 sleeper hit My Big Fat Greek Wedding, which grossed over $368 million worldwide. The Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson-produced film went on to become the highest-grossing romantic comedy of 2002—and of all time. Written by and starring Nia Vardalos, the Joel Zwick-helmed film told the story of Toula Portokalos, a single 30-year-old woman who feels stuck in her life as the unmarried “failed” sister of the Portokalos family. After Toula takes charge of her life, she meets the handsome and utterly white-Anglo-Saxon-Protestant Ian Miller (John Corbett), falling madly in love. Hilarity ensues when Toula’s Greek-to-the-nines family first disapproves and then wildly enfolds Ian into their Olympic embrace.
