In 1993, Garth Brooks was set to perform the national anthem at the Super Bowl. Much to the dismay of event organizers, he threatened to walk off the stage and refuse to sing if NBC didn’t agree to air his latest music video for the song “We Shall Be Free.” NBC eventually caved, and from then on, all performers are required to pre-record their performance of the anthem.
