On August 31, 1997, we lost the People’s Princess in a tragic, paparazzi-fueled car chase through the streets of Paris. Fate has taken a number of other much-missed public figures before their time; now we’re celebrating the life of England’s Rose and 12 other celebrities lost to tragedy. By Katherine Butler

Aaliyah, 1979-2001
One of R&B’s youngest sensations in the 1990s, Aaliyah was a star before she had even left her teens. Her debut album in 1994, Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number, became a platinum hit, while her 1996 follow-up, One in a Million, went double platinum. Her music is among the most “forward-looking R&B of its time.” Tragically, the singer was killed in a plane crash in the Bahamas on August 25, 2001. She was 22 years old.
