Mandy Moore Has Always Been Our “Only Hope”
By Kerensa CadenasIt’s Mandy Moore’s 31st birthday! We’ve loved Mandy since she infected us with “Candy” as teenagers and continued that with her catchy pop music and later soothing folk.
While we’ve always loved her, our tipping point into never ending Mandy devotion was when she costarred with bad boy Shane West in the Nicholas Sparks’ adaptation of A Walk to Remember. Released in 2002, popular troublemaker Landon Carter (West) finally gets what’s coming to him after a prank gone wrong. In typical teen movie fashion, this pairs him with the sweet, virginal outcast Jamie Sullivan (Moore) while he’s doing community service. Throughout the duration of his community service (acting in a play?) Landon begins to see past Jamie’s lumpy cardigan sets and falls for her.
Landon realizes his crush on Jamie, of course, when they finally perform the play and Jamie does the musical number, “Only Hope,” which thankfully is on the soundtrack.
We’ll look past your crying on Moore’s birthday after reliving this scene because we’ll be crying right there with you.
Happy Birthday Mandy!
