Thunderpants (2002)
Rupert Grint will now forever be known as Ron Weasley, beloved best friend of Harry Potter and unlikely honey of Hermione. We all know that Grint made his debut in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001), but his second film was a blast. Literally.
Grint’s first post-Potter movie was Thunderpants (2002). The description is so awesome we prefer to leave it untouched: An 11-year-old boy’s amazing ability to break wind leads him first to fame and then to death row, before it helps him to fulfill his ambition of becoming an astronaut. Of course it does. Grint plays Alan A. Allen, best friend to the titular flatulator. Watch the above trailer; Grint’s performance is a breath of fresh air.
Grint promoted the film like a true pro; perhaps he learned how from his costars, Oscar nominees Ned Beatty and Paul Giamatti. The movie also featured the marvelous Stephen Fry and fellow Potter-ite Josh Herdman (Draco Malfoy’s stooge Greg Goyle). Hmm, maybe Thunderpants is worth checking out.
Harry Potter Casting Announcement
Like the rest of the Potter cast, we got to watch Mr. Grint grow up onscreen. Check out this clip from August of 2000 announcing the cast, in which Rupert tells the press that his prior acting work includes school plays and “quite a lot of raps.” Could his next project be a remake of Beat Street? After Thunderpants, the sky is the limit.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, the last big-screen visit to the Wizarding World, opens July 15 in theaters everywhere.
