Actor Kellan Lutz is having one hell of a good year. He’s playing the god Poseidon in the blockbuster action hit Immortals and follows that up mere days later with Breaking Dawn Part 1, the penultimate film in the uber-successful Twilight saga. Playing vampire Emmett Cullen for the last four years, Lutz has gained a legion of dedicated fans who follow his every move. But there’s still plenty to learn about the up-and-coming actor, and Snakkle has unearthed a few surprising tidbits right from Lutz in our exclusive chat with him.
1. Kellan admits he’s a big fan of abstinence… no, really! The actor says he’s happy that the Twilight films are teaching kids about abstinence. “You know, our world is kinda going corrupt. When I was growing up I couldn’t say ‘shut up’ or ‘be quiet’ or I’d get punished. Now all my younger brothers are cursing. The world is slowly getting more corrupt, but you don’t see the change. For me, it’s a reality check for society to step back and be like, ‘You can wait for marriage.’ I love marriage. I love the whole concept. I’m old-school, and I really want to get married someday and have a family someday. It’s really cool to be a part of something that makes society look at marriage again and see the values of it.”
2. Lutz says he is finally getting on the musical bandwagon and learning an instrument. “Recently, I just bought a guitar. I have been so lucky to work with musicians in these films, like Rob (Pattinson) and Jackson (Rathbone), and we will get together. I’m always sitting there and I finally asked, ‘Why don’t I have a guitar?’ I have the opportunity to work with musically gifted actors that are so talented, so it’s a free education.”
3. He almost didn’t even audition for the Twilight films. “From day one I had an amazing agent that pushed for me to audition for Twilight. I didn’t want it. I wanted to take a break from acting, but he knew it was something I should be a part of.” And now Lutz says the cast are genuinely some of his closest friends. “It’s not like I’m doing a movie with three guys just like me that love football and play poker. We are all so different! Like, say I am reading a great book and I want to talk to someone about it, I’ll be like, ‘Yo, Jackson, let’s talk.’ Or Rob. Ashley [Greene] is my best friend, so it’s great to work with her and cook. Nikki [Reed] and I work out together. Peter [Facinelli] is like a father figure, and he gives advice because he’s gone through it all. He’s a great role model.”
4. The actor admits he’s got his sights on Matt Damon’s career. “I feel like I fly under the radar. There are a lot of eyes on Rob, Kristen [Stewart], and Taylor [Lautner], which is fine because they’re working their butts off. But I still get all the press and passion out of it and I can make my own name. I can challenge myself as an actor to reach outside the box and do a romantic comedy, then an action movie. I love Matt Damon’s career and would love to be of his caliber someday.”
5. Kellan says he’s not waiting for fate to determine where his life and career go next; he’s got dreams that he plans to make literal. “I have a vision board that I update every year as far as making goals and having things to work toward. I always wanted to work with Tarsem [Singh, the director of Immortals] and to be in a Greek movie, so all these cards fell together very well. Working with the all-star cast, how we were treated, and working out with everyone, it was a dream part. I was already giddy.”
