Before They Were Stars: Scarlett Johansson was born to architect Karsten Johansson and film buff Melanie Sloan. At 9, she made her film debut in North as John Ritter’s daughter. Two years later, she scored an Independent Spirit nomination for her spunky turn as a runaway foster kid in Manny & Lo. But it was her performance as an injured teen in Robert Redford’s The Horse Whisperer that made audiences take notice of this budding beauty—all before she even hit puberty.
Where Are They Now: Johansson’s performances in Ghost World and Lost in Translation garnered her critical acclaim and a place on the A-List. Since then, she’s used her husky voice and curvaceous figure to great effect in a number of diverse genres. She’s equally at home in period pieces (Girl with a Pearl Earring, The Other Boleyn Girl), modern-day dramas (Vicky Cristina Barcelona, The Nanny Diaries) and action flicks (Iron Man 2), and doesn’t mind playing the bad girl (Match Point). She even proved her chops on stage, winning a Tony for her Broadway debut in a revival of A View from the Bridge. Unfortunately, Johansson’s love life isn’t as successful as her career: Her marriage to Ryan Reynolds ended after two years, and her subsequent romance with Sean Penn was short-lived. She also kicked butt in The Avengers and Iron Man 3.
Snakkle Snippet: In The Horse Whisperer, the credits say “introducing Scarlett Johansson” even though it was her seventh film.
