Emmy-Winning Homeland Returns, and Star Morena Baccarin Dishes on the New Season
Showtime’s freshman series Homeland just cleaned up at the 2012 Emmy Awards, with the show winning Outstanding Drama Series as well as Outstanding Lead Actor and Actress in a Drama Series for Damian Lewis and Claire Danes respectively. The tension-filled political thriller returns Sunday, September 30 at 8/7c, and Snakkle tried to get some scoop from the gorgeous Morena Baccarin, who plays Lewis’ long-suffering wife, Jess Brody. WARNING: MINOR SPOILER ALERT! By Erin FoxSnakkle: I got to see the first episode of Homeland season 2 last night, and I was blown away by your acting, and your reaction to finding Brody’s Quran in the garage. How much is this fundamentally going to change any trust you felt with your husband since he’s been back?
Morena Baccarin: Well, it’s a big problem, and it kind of sets the season off in a spin for her. You know, she’s constantly up and down, trying to figure out how to keep her family together. And I thought one of my major arcs this season is just to say finally, “You know what? I can’t do this unless you bring this [truth] to the table.” It gets intense.
Snakkle: They’ve been through so much, it seems like they should just stick together and keep going. But is there a point for her where you think she can’t do it anymore?
Baccarin: I think there is that point, and I think that they reached it. And you know, it’s up to him whether or not he can change.
Snakkle: I also find it interesting that your daughter and Brody are bonding so much over this revelation. Do you think she’s going to start asking more questions and want to know more about his religious affiliation?
Baccarin: Absolutely. But I also think that she’s going to realize, she’s going to turn to my side a little bit more and realize that I’m fighting for the family. We have a nice bonding moment where we realize he has changed and he’s not the same man that he used to be.
Snakkle: Is there some large scary incident that happens that snaps her out of it?
Baccarin: Um, I think a combination of many.
Snakkle: And are we going to see you have any sort of dalliance then with your former lover?
Baccarin: Um, you know that relationship is very real and they are so in love with each other. So far nothing… but I think she’s just trying to keep the family together.
Snakkle: Are you surprised that she’s so taken with the whole Congressman’s wife thing?
Baccarin: No, I think it’s kind of great, because it gives her a purpose for the first time in a while. And focus outside of him. And I think she’s finding her… it’s intoxicating to hobnob with those D.C. women and to see the possibility that she can make a change, that she can actually have a purpose.
The new season of Homeland premieres Sunday, September 30, at 8/7c on Showtime.
