20 Years of Soul Singing: Snakkle Catches Up with the Stars of Sister Act
Has it really been 20 years since Whoopi Goldberg and friends shook it up as the sisters with soul in Sister Act? The 1992 comedy starred Goldberg as Deloris van Cartier, a Reno (not even Vegas—ouch) lounge singer who is on the run from her mobster boyfriend Vince LaRocca (Harvey Keitel). When Deloris hides out in a convent, hilarity and singing ensue. The film was a huge box office success, eventually grossing over $200 million worldwide. Whoopi Goldberg—Today
The Oscar winner has kept busy since Sister Act made her a box-office sensation. She was a reoccurring character on Star Trek: The Next Generation (1988-1993) and reprised her role as Deloris in 1993’s Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit. Goldberg returned to her dramatic roots in Girl, Interrupted (1999). Since then, she’s held numerous roles in film and TV, including her current stint as a cohost on The View. In 2010, Goldberg played Mother Superior in the West End musical production of Sister Act. She is pragmatic about her success in the film franchise. As she told The Guardian in 2009, “I was funny, and the music was great.”
