Where Are They Now?
Opa! 10 Years Later, Snakkle Catches Up with the Cast of My Big Fat Greek Wedding
Take one Greek singleton, throw in an all-American guy, and what do you get? Try the 2002 sleeper hit My Big Fat Greek Wedding, which grossed over $368 million worldwide. The Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson-produced film went on to become the highest-grossing romantic comedy of 2002—and of all time. Written by and starring Nia Vardalos, the Joel Zwick-helmed film told the story of Toula Portokalos, a single 30-year-old woman who feels stuck in her life as the unmarried “failed” sister of the Portokalos family. After Toula takes charge of her life, she meets the handsome and utterly white-Anglo-Saxon-Protestant Ian Miller (John Corbett), falling madly in love. Hilarity ensues when Toula’s Greek-to-the-nines family first disapproves and then wildly enfolds Ian into their Olympic embrace. Here’s a salute to our favorite Greek family and what they are up to today. By Katherine Butler

Nia Vardalos—Today
Vardalos has kept busy since her success with My Big Fat Greek Wedding. She appeared in the TV series based on the film, on the series Drop Dead Diva (2009) and Cougar Town (2011), and in films such as Connie and Carla (2004) and Larry Crowne (2011). Vardalos admits that it’s the Portokalos family who made her super hit so successful. As Vardalos shares, “People say all the time, ‘I wish I was part of that family.’ I am so lucky. I have the greatest family in the world. I’m really lucky.” As her audience, we feel lucky to have known her family as well.
