MTV Gets a Whole Lot More Awkward: The Cast Teases Season Two
It’s been a long year since Lauren Iungerich’s refreshing teen comedy, Awkward. debuted on MTV. We were introduced to a sweet, if somewhat sophomoric, love triangle in that of Jake-Jenna-Matty (come on, Matty was too image obsessed to hold Jenna’s hand in public; how could she pick him!?), an amazing catchphrase from an outside-the-box mean girl, and a mystery with a heartbreaking end. When the first season finale rolled around, things heated up when we learned who wrote the carefrontation letter and who Jenna picked as her boyfriend. And then the show faded to black for a long fall, winter, and spring. But season two is just around the corner, and the cast gives Snakkle five reasons to tune back into the show. By Danielle Turchiano5.) JENNA PICKED JAKE BUT THE LOVE TRIANGLE CONTINUES. Well, what would the show be without a little romantic drama, after all? “The relationship with Jake is a lot healthier than it was with Matty. He holds her hand out in the open; he’s very sweet and very caring, and he’s not ashamed of her, and he makes her feel good about herself,” series star Ashley Rickards previewed.
“[But] your first love is hard to get over, and you can fall in love again, but I’m a firm believer that you never fall out of love with anybody you’ve [truly] loved…So I think with that philosophy in mind, she still has feelings for Matty because it’s really hard to let go of something that lasted that long.
4.) THE PAST COMES BACK TO HAUNT THEM. A blast from Lacey’s (Nikki DeLoach) past, and Kevin’s (Mike Faiola) by default, returns in the form of Ben, a guy Nikki new in high school. Life Unexpected’s Kristoffer Polaha plays Ben, a role that series creator Iungerich wrote with him in mind and that he himself called “the closest character to Baze that [he] will probably ever play.”
In addition to whatever Ben brings with him, Faiola previewed some “revelations about Kevin’s past and his relationship with Lacey, and a revelation about his early days as a father” to come out.
3.) FRIENDSHIPS WILL BE TESTED. Though there is one perhaps surprising champion in the Team Jenna & Jake corner in the form of Lissa (Greer Grammer), Matty (Beau Mirchoff) isn’t going out without a fight!
“Knowing Matty, he’s not going to stop until he gets what he wants, so I know Matty’s going to do what he can to get Jenna back,” Mirchoff smirked. “[Her decision] makes quite a rift, especially in Jake and Matty’s friendship…Some people’s hearts are going to be hurt, and relationships are going to be strained.”
2.) BIGGER CELEBRATIONS MEAN MORE ELABORATE DRESSES. Last year there was the Knick-Knackers party and a much more, well, formal, Winter Formal dance that yielded some pretty amazing duds from the ladies of the show. This year, there promises to be even more as Molly Tarlov previewed a lot of holiday celebrations, including New Years’, Valentine’s Day, and even a wedding. Though Tarlov is one who prefers the more outrageous dresses and therefore felt her Winter Formal wear was slightly more exciting than her dress for the wedding, Rickards warned her “rose-petaled cupcake” dress wouldn’t be one for the fashion savvy.
1.) A NEW EDITION TO THE HAMILTON HOUSE. Don’t worry, Awkward. fans, this comedy isn’t going to jump the shark in season two by introducing a baby! No, instead, they are truly cementing their MTV status by installing a hot tub in the backyard.
“The only thing I can say about it is that in Lacey’s journey to figure out how to have better tools at solving life’s problems, she thinks that maybe a hot tub would be a great tool to help the situation,” DeLoach said of the new piece of set dressing.
Awkward. returns to MTV on Thursday, June 28th at 10:30pm.
